RURAL ACCESS to EMERGENCY DEVICES
GRANT PROGAM
TEXAS STATE OFFICE OF RURAL HEALTH
The Waller County Constable Precinct 1 patrol vehicle is equipped with a semi automatic external defibrillator, which was gained by submitting a grant to the Rural Access to Emergency Devices Grant Program. The grant awarded a new Cardiac Science Power Heart AED G3 Automated External Defibrillator. The Constable and deputies are trained in CPR and also all are trained to utilize the AED. The AED finds its home in the patrol unit where it is mobile and likely to be first on the scene of a cardiac arrest victim.
The AED is also made available at many community events.
The Constable Pct. 1 can facilitate AED and CPR training to groups in need of the training. Please contact Constable Hashaw for more information.
More Information about Cardiac Arrest and AED
Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) — or massive heart attack — as it is sometimes known, which kills 450,000 people in the U.S. alone each year, can strike anyone. Even a seemingly healthy person can suffer cardiac arrest without warning. According to the American Heart Association® (AHA), as many as 50% of SCA victims have no prior indication of heart disease — their first symptom is cardiac arrest.
The only definitive treatment for SCA is a defibrillation shock — an electrical pulse through the heart — which restores a normal heart rhythm. The chance of an SCA victim's survival decreases by 10 percent for every minute that passes, so in order to be effective, defibrillation treatment must be administered within the first few minutes of SCA.
